Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest and biggest parks in Kenya at 11,747 square kilometers. It was opened in April of 1948 and named due to Tsavo River; The Park is divided into east and west sections. The east section is less developed than the west section, but more accessible.

Time to visit; The Park is more interesting in May to October.

The gates; The Park can be accessed by three main gates, from Voi through the Manyani gate, from Mombassa through the Bachuma gate or from Malindi through the Sala gate. There are also several airstrips in the park that allow chartered light planes. Inside the park, the Athi and Tsavo rivers converge to form the Galana River.

Access;

It is easily accessible by road from Mombassa (3-4 hours), Nairobi its 10 hours, air (light aircraft) and railway and from Mombassa, it’s via Bachuma gate. The road was recently graded and is attracting many visitors from North Coast due to easy access of the park.Additionaly the park has got six airstrips in the southern part of the park and thirteen in the Northern part. There are no scheduled flights to the Park but chartered light planes can be used. The Park opens at 6.30 a.m. and closes at 6.30 p.m.

Attractions and activities;

There are many attractions and activities and include; large herds of elephant wildlife, Rocks(Mudanda),Luguard falls, Rivers (Galana).Visitors walk down the river and view the rapids and even also the Dam( Aruba) that attracts many animals and birds. Activities at the park are; Game viewing, walking safari along the galena and bird watching.

Accommodation facilities;

Lodges ;( Voi safari lodge), Tented camps (galdessa camp, Epiya chapeyu, Tsavo safari camp, satoa camp Sobo, Patterson safari camp), and there are also public campsites which don’t provide facilities to visitors. If preferred carry your own properties for use; Dolly, Kandir, Main gate camp site.

Kenya can be accessed by Road, Air and water By air its 9 hours and 30 minutes from London to Kenya. On arrival to Kenya international Airport (Jomo Kenyatta international there are airport buses that can help you to reach out to other places. they help tourists with in the air port grounds

To/from the airport, a Kenyan Bus Services and a Kenyan Airways bus leave every 20 minutes (journey time – 40 minutes). Scheduled bus service to and from the town centre is available at unit 1 and 2 bus stops. Taxis are readily available, but the fare should be established before getting into the vehicle (journey time – 15 minutes). Facilities at the airport include; Duty-free shop, hotel reservation, bank/bureau de change (open 24 hours), post office, restaurant/bar, car hire, Internet cafe and Wi-Fi hotspots.

Getting to Kenya by water the main port is Mombassa and there are presently no international ferry services to Kenya but cruise ships dock at Mombassa.
To access Kenya by road, the main crossing points from Tanzania are at Lunga Lunga south of Mombassa and Namanga on the road to Arusha, with smaller posts at Isebania and Taveta. From Uganda there are crossing points at Buisa and Malaba. Note that at Malaba; the Kenyan and Ugandan customs posts are about 1km (0.6 miles) apart and, other than bicycle taxis, there is no transport between them.

However, Mobile telephones roaming agreement exist with international mobile phone companies. The main network providers are Celtel (website: www.celtel.com), which has extensive coverage in the southwest, around the coast and Mombassa, and Safari COM (website: www.safaricom.co.ke), with coverage in from Mombassa to Nairobi and in the southeast. Local SIM cards and top-up cards are available to buy everywhere. There are also internet cafes in cities and Hotels.

Post offices are identified by Telkom Kenya (Kenya Posts & Telecommunications Corporation). Post boxes are red. Stamps can usually be bought at post offices, stationers, souvenir shops and hotels. Airmail to Western Europe takes up to four days, and the service is generally reliable. If you are sending parcels out of the country the contents must be inspected and the parcel wrapped (in brown paper and string) at the post office. The post office works from Monday- Friday 0800-1700, Saturday 0900-1200.

Televisions are good media communication tools that entertain, show live visual pictures and matter to the public and the State-owned Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) has channels in English and Swahili, Kenya Television Network (the first TV station to break the state broadcasting monopoly; its now operated by a standard Group.NTV is a Nairobi- based station operated by the Nation Media group, and other private channels include Nairobi-based station citizen TV and family TV

Radios; Kenya is also blessed with radio stations like Kenya broadcasting Corporation(KBC) which is a state owned with language based net work in English and Swahili and 15 indigenous languages.

Metro FM is a national music-based station operated by KBC.
Capital FM and Kiss FM are music stations.
Radio Citizen is a private station with wide coverage, which also operates Kikuyu-language Inooro FM and Luo-language.
Full-time FM relays of the BBC World Service are on the air in Nairobi, Mombassa and Kisumu, and some BBC program s are also rebroadcast by private Kameme FM.
The Voice of America and Radio France International are relayed on FM in Nairobi and Mombassa.

The visas that are required in Kenya are from nationals from countries like British, Australian, Canada, USA, and others from European Union countries.

However, all nationals referred to above may obtain a visa on entry in Kenya and Nationals not referred to in the chart above are advised to contact the embassy to check visa requirements. Multiple-entry visas may only be issued to nationals of the United Kingdom on application.

The same applies to passports where by all nationals from countries mentioned above must have a valid passport for six months from date of entry required by all nationals.

Due to the climate conditions of Kenya a tourist is advised to put on Lightweight cottons and linens with rainwear for the coast and lakeside. Warmer clothing is needed in June and July and for the cooler mornings on the coast. Lightweights are needed for much of the year in the highlands. Rainwear is advisable between March and June and October and December.

The coastal areas are tropical, but tempered by monsoon winds. The lowlands are hot but mainly dry, while the highlands are more temperate with four seasons. Nairobi has a very pleasant climate throughout the year due to its altitude. Near Lake Victoria, the temperatures are much higher and rainfall can be heavy.
