Mountain Kenya is one with the second highest peak in Africa, extinct volcano sitting on the equator and Africa’s second highest mountain that stands at a height of 5199m (17,058ft). Mount Kenya National Park was opened in 1949 and has been respected by local inhabitants for generations and is the official seat of Kikuyu gods ‘Ngai’.
Attractions;
It offers striking mountain scenery, starting with upland forest near the bottom and progressing to mountain forest, bamboo forests and glacier peaks. A wide variety of wildlife inhabits are in the park with unique animal species like Sykes, Colobus monkeys, buffalo, elephants, black rhinos, leopards plus the exclusive Bongo antelopes and giant forest hogs. It is also home to many species of birds such as the giant kingfisher, olive pigeons and red-fronted parrots.
Access
The place can be accessed by road, Air and Railway and the main stations are; Air: Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Wilson Airport. Rail: Train: Thika Station. Road: There are Bus Services to Nanyuki from Nairobi and other small Car are also available which head to the northwest from Nairobi by-passing Murunga, before heading west around the base of Mount Kenya to Nanyuki, by road its 3 -4 hours drive.
Time to visit; January – February, July- October.
